RE: charging problems

Check the brushes in the alternator and fuses. I think that if you disconnect the battery while it is running, and it stays running, the alternator is OK. If you still have trouble, let me know. Matt

That is your "alternator". Charge the battery. Start it and disconnect the battery. Does it stay running?

The problem is with your charging system. I have a regulator that will fit that model. You can test the charging coil with an ohmmeter to check for an open. You could also check DC volts on the "B" terminal of the regulator while it is running. Disconnect the wire to that terminal and check DC volts to ground while running.

RE: charging problems

I'm not sure the differences but I think the '73 generators are similar to the '72s. When I got my '72 Sprint the generator had no output, I cleaned the commutator (the copper part that the brushes ride against) with very fine sandpaper. The bike was not used for 15 years and the copper had oxidized brown like an old penny, once I cleaned it up it worked fine. Also check to make sure the brushes move free. Hope this helps, good luck!

I did that about five times before I realized one of my brushes was too short. New brushes fixed it. Never overlook the obvious. I think 12V started in 73.

RE: charging problems

The 12 volt systems are very reliable. That being said, when there is a problem, it is usually the regulator-rectifier. The service manual tells you how to test it. I don't have one with me now so I can't copy what it says and post it here. Mabey someone else can help? If not in a couple of days I will get back with you.
Good Luck
Tom
