'73 ss350, Alternator project

Many Thanks to Matt and Leslie for their advice. Just thought I'd share the progress of changing out the alternators on my Sprint. Had to buy a steering wheel puller for $18. have every thing apart, and waiting on the fresh Alternator, I'll post more photos when it's done.

Make sure you test the coil wires for continuity from where they connect to the coils and where they hook up to the regulator. A broken or shorted wire is always a possibility. Otherwise, congrats. Matt

just checked the continuity, seems fine.
I have no choice but to change them now though, I ruined the ones in there now with the puller, while I was trying to get the rotor off.

With no wiring troubles, I bet the coils were bad, just as you thought. In that case, they were already bad.

RE: '73 ss350, Alternator project

So I replaced the Stator and Alternator coils, with one I got from Moto Italia, seemed like there was voltage going to the regulator. But it still wasnt charging.
So I replaced the resistor in my regulator, it looked burnt.
And I finally saw the Blue light come on with the ignition on...!
thought it was fixed... but it died while I rode around with the lights on, and couldn't electric or even kick start it, had to have friends push start it, and I rode home in the dark....

ughhhhhhhhhhhhh thought I had it... then I didn't, then I thought I had it again... then I had to be push started in front of a bunch of Harley riders, and ride home with no lights... ughhh

That resistor looks shot. Hmmm. Perhaps someone more familiar with 73-74 can chime in. Otherwise Ron (Lancaster) will help talk you through what you should check.

Ron (Lancaster) told me to buy a new regulator from Moto Italia. There is only 1 resistor, and 2 capacitors in these Regulators, doesn't seem like fixing them would be to hard.

Ron is very sharp and a super nice guy. He lives and breathes Sprint. If he told you that, that is what I'd do. They make a better one (reg) that you will have to rewire. No biggy and lots tougher than the OEM one.

Puller bolt through a coil? Been there, done that. Put Moto Italia replacement reg on;cured my charging problem. Easy wiring mod. Good luck.

RE: '73 ss350, Alternator project

If my lying eyes are correct, that is a 50 ohm resistor. Simply connect an ohm meter or a multi meter set to the ohms position and read 50 ohms. If no connection or either grossly more that or less than 50 ohms replace. It looks to be a 50 ohm wire wound reisitor with a ceramic case. The capacitaor is more complicated to check, The only true test is to charge it and check how long it takes to bled it down with a know resistance. Easier for the layman to just change. In the Capacitor you must match type, polarity (if polarised noted by +or- marks on the body of the cap) and capacitance and at least the same voltage rating but more is ok but not way more on a 12 system 25 v would be ok. The diodes conduct in one way but block in the other direction or in diode check .46 volt fwd. I hope I have helped you with this.
Charles
